VIETNAM MOBILE DAY 2018 ON WAY

Vietnam Mobile Day (VMD) 2018, the largest and most prestigious event in technology and especially mobile technology, with the mission of engaging the tech-loving community, will return in June.

ALIBABA TO INVEST $320 MILLION IN THAILAND, AS RIVALS BOOST PRESENCE

Alibaba is investing $320 million in Thailand as the e-commerce giant aims to tap Chinese consumers’ appetite for the Southeast nation’s agricultural goods and for its tourism market amid growing competition from rivals.

China’s biggest e-commerce company is investing more than 10 billion baht ($320.20 million) in a “digital hub” in the Thai military government’s much-touted Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), government officials said.

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak told reporters on Thursday that Alibaba’s digital hub will be a platform that connects Thai agricultural products to the Chinese and global markets. [Read more]

GCASH, ALIPAY JOINTLY LAUNCHES NEW GCASH QR CODE

GLOBE Fintech Innovations Inc., which operates GCash, the Philippines’ largest mobile wallet, and Ant Financial Services Group, which operates Alipay, the world’s largest mobile and online payment platform, announced a new QR code solution that will enable local merchants to accept payment from both local users using GCash and Chinese visitors using Alipay via one single connection to GCash QR Code solution.

Alipay and GCash will work together with acquirers to promote this new QR code to enable local merchants to service an even bigger pool of consumers with seamless payment experiences. This service will be rolled out over the next few weeks across GCash’s merchant network. [Read more]

PUC TO INVEST RM90M IN 11STREET MALAYSIA E-COMMERCE PLATFORM

PUC Bhd has agreed to invest RM90 million in Celcom Planet Sdn Bhd (CPSB), which owns the online 11Street Malaysia platform, and taking over management control in the e-commerce platform.

11Street Malaysia is a joint venture between Axiata Digital Services Sdn Bhd (ADS) and SK Planet Global Holdings Pte Ltd (SKP).

The cash deal will be funded through internal funds, bank borrowings, equity and/ or debt fundraising. PUC will have the right to nominate and appoint the CEO and CMO of the e-commerce platform.

PUC will be appointed as the platform’s preferred partner, providing 11Street Malaysia with digital marketing needs, and its mobile application Presto as the marketplace’s preferred payment platform as well as technology needs. [Read more]

UNIONPAY LEADS THE WAY AS THE FIRST GLOBAL PAYMENT NETWORK TO KICKSTART NATIONWIDE DEPLOYMENT OF QR CODE FOR PAYMENTS IN MALAYSIA

UnionPay International, a global payment network, has kickstarted the nationwide deployment of the EMV-compliant QR Code for payments in Malaysia. As the first large-scale deployment of QR Code for payments locally, UnionPay QR Code for payments will be progressively rolled out starting today, with the aim of enabling QR Code payment acceptance points across the nation by the end of 2018.

With this deployment, UnionPay Cardholders with mobile apps that support QR Code for payments will be able to complete their payment transactions at participating merchants with a simple scan of a QR Code. Not only does QR Code for payments deliver added convenience and simplify the payment process for consumers and merchants, it also lowers the barrier of entry for adopting digital payment methods by offering a secure, easy-to-deploy and low-cost e-payment alternative to small-and-medium-sized enterprises. SINGAPORE AND ZHEJIANG DEEPEN COLLABORATION IN URBAN SOLUTIONS, E-COMMERCE, WHOLESALE TRADE AND LOGISTICS

At the 13th Singapore-Zhejiang Economic and Trade Council (SZETC) meeting in Zhoushan city, 14 agreements were signed in the urban solutions, e-commerce, wholesale trade and logistics sectors by Singapore companies.

The two sides discussed deeper collaboration in urban solutions, e-commerce, wholesale trade and logistics at the meeting. The discussion and these agreements are in line with Zhejiang’s priorities in urban-rural development reforms, industrial upgrading, trade liberalisation and e-commerce to maintain its economic competitiveness.

The SZETC is supported by Enterprise Singapore, which has the role of the Secretariat for the Council. Over 80 government and business representatives from financial services, logistics, oil and gas, professional services, real estate and wholesale trade are on the business mission from 25 April to 27 April 2018, in conjunction with the SZETC meeting. OCBC BANK’S THE FIRST IN SINGAPORE TO ENABLE INSTANT DIGITAL CARD ISSUANCE

OCBC Bank is the first bank in Singapore to enable instant digital card issuance and provisioning on Apply Pay via its mobile banking app.

Since March 2018, OCBC Bank has given its customers the ability to make transactions with merchants that accept Apple Pay within minutes of applying for a new Visa credit or debit card, according to a media release on Monday (Apr 16).

OCBC Bank customers, including first-time applicants, can apply for a card online and receive almost immediate approval for their application, without having to wait for a physical card to be mailed. [Read more]
