GRAB TO EXPAND INTO SOUTH EATS ASIAN MARKETS, OFFERING LOANS AND FINANCIAL SERVICES

Grab, the dominant ride-hailing service in Southeast Asia, is to start providing loans and lending services, after announcing a partnership with Japanese credit card company Credit Saison.

The joint venture called Grab Financial Services Asia will offer micro-financing services, initially to meet the needs of Grab drivers, agents and merchants. The services will include working capital loans, financing for smartphones and durable goods, and consumer goods financing.

In a statement, the joint venture says it seeks to “provide loans and lending services to millions of unbanked and underbanked consumers, micro-entrepreneurs and small businesses across Southeast Asia.” [Read more]

SINGAPORE, INDONESIA TO SHARE EXPERTISE ON E-COMMERCE LOGISTICS

Kicking off two learning-exchange programmes between Singapore and Indonesia, about 100 public sector leaders and education specialists gathered in a half-day leadership workshop to share e-commerce related challenges from their jobs.

This learning exchange comes as part of both nations' bilateral efforts to develop a digital economy, and will focus on two tracks in public administration and technical education.

In particular, Temasek Foundation International, Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE), and Republic Polytechnic (RP) will work with the Indonesian government to share their knowledge in the area of e-commerce logistics, the organisations said in a joint statement. [Read more]

HO CHI MINH CITY TOPS VIETNAM E-COMMERCE INDEX 2018

Ho Chi Minh City again leads the country in e-commerce, according to the Vietnam E-commerce Association (VECOM)’s Vietnam E-commerce Index 2018, released at the Vietnam Online Business Forum 2018 on March 14 in Hanoi.

The city recorded an aggregate score of 82.1 points, 3.5 points higher than in the 2017 index. Sub-indexes put the city much higher than the national average, in particular in Infrastructure and Human Resources and Business-to-Business (B2B) transactions.

Hanoi was second, with 79.8 points, 4 points higher than last year, followed by northern Hai Phong city, central Da Nang city, and southern Binh Duong province. [Read more]

AMAZON TO CONTINUE ITS REGIONAL EXPANSION WITH VIETNAM LAUNCH

Amazon.com is set to officially launch its e-commerce operations in Vietnam, less than a year after its first foray into the Southeast Asian market.

In addition to expanding the range of products it offers to the Vietnamese market, the US retail giant will partner with the Vietnam E-commerce Association (VECOM), a conglomeration that boasts more than 140 local members, to allow local small and medium-sized enterprises to sell and export their goods through the platform, according to the Nikkei Asian Review.

Amazon is expected to reveal the details of the deal on 14 March at the Vietnam Online Business Forum 2018 in Hanoi. [Read more]

BAYAD CENTER LAUNCHES BILLS PAYMENT MOBILE APP

Bayad Center (BC), a subsidiary of the manila electric co. (meralco), has launched its mobile app that will give consumers a more convenient bills payment scheme. BC Mobile or the Bayad Center Mobile app is a one-stop online shop for a Filipino’s bills payment needs.

The app uses credit or debit cards, and PayPal in paying bills, and it is equipped with a unique system that would protect the data and financial information of its users. Among the bills that can be paid through the app are electricity bills like Meralco, water utility bills, phone and internet bills, and the like.

Apart from bills payment, BC Mobile also offers a bill reminder feature that would notify customers of their due dates for their payments. The app also has a Bayad Center branch locator for paying customers who still prefer an over-the-counter or face-to-face payment scheme. [Read more]

ALIBABA CLOUD BOOTS UP FIRST DATA CENTER IN INDONESIA

Alibaba Cloud launched its first data center in Indonesia on Thursday, addressing a growing demand for reliable, scalable cloud services among small- to mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the country.

The new data center will offer a suite of cloud services spanning elastic computing and database management to networking and security, among others. Its launch brings the number of Alibaba Cloud data centers up to 18 countries and regions worldwide.

The data center underscores Alibaba Cloud’s commitment to support an Indonesian government-backed initiative to create 1,000 viable start-ups worth US$10 billion by 2020, the company said. [Read more]

WECHAT TO BRING PAYMENT OPTION TO COMFORTDELGRO TAXIS FROM APRIL

Chinese social media giant WeChat is continuing to expand its footprint in Singapore, bringing WeChat Pay to ComfortDelGro taxis from next month, said Ms Grace Yin, operation director of WeChat Pay International Business

Ms Yin disclosed the partnership as an example of how the company is targeting business users first in bringing Tencent’s services via its social media platform to this market. “Our focus is to target the businesses and merchants that service the Chinese tourists,” the executive explained.

The ComfortDelGro partnership comes on the heels of Chinese rival Ant Financial offering its Alipay service to the taxi operator last August, as they too target Chinese tourists in efforts to expand globally. [Read more]
