SOUTHEAST ASIA INTERNET ECONOMY TO HIT $50 BILLION IN 2017

Southeast Asia’s internet economy, spanning online travel to ride-hailing, will reach $50 billion this year, putting it on a solid trajectory to grow fourfold by 2025, according to a joint research report by Google and Temasek Holdings Pte.

As more consumers buy airline tickets and book hotels through smartphones, the region’s online travel market expanded from $19.1 billion in 2015 to $26.6 billion in 2017, according to the report. The research covered four key sectors of the internet economy: travel, media, ride-hailing and e-commerce.

The growth is being driven by a surging number of new smartphone users. Southeast Asia will have 330 million monthly active internet users by the end of 2017 –- equivalent to the size of the U.S. population -- after adding more than 70 million users since 2015. [Read more]

DHL TO ADD 1,000 DELIVERY LOCATIONS

DHL eCommerce Thailand, a division of the logistics firm Deutsche Post DHL Group, will expand its local delivery network to 1,000 locations nationwide by 2018, fuelled by online shopping growth in the country.

DHL ServicePoints now cover 200 spots in Bangkok and vicinity. Another 500 locations will be added in the first quarter next year.

"We decided to expand our domestic delivery network in Thailand to reach 100% nationwide coverage through DHL ServicePoints," said Kiattichai Pitpreecha, managing director of DHL eCommerce. [Read more]

GO-JEK BUYS THREE STARTUPS TO ADVANCE ITS MOBILE PAYMENT BUSINESS

Go-Jek, Indonesia’s largest ride-hailing service, said it had reached deals to acquire three local fintech companies to further beef up its formidable payments arm as it aims to consolidate its position as the dominant player in the country’s digital payments space.

Go-Jek said it had acquired  offline payment firm Kartuku, payment gateway Midtrans and payment and lending network Mapan for undisclosed sums. Although Go-Jek did not reveal the value of the acquisitions, the combined deals marks the largest exit in Indonesia’s nascent startup ecosystem so far.

The goal of the acquisitions — all of which are fellow Indonesian businesses — is to bolster Go-Jek’s payment network, which centers around its Go-Pay mobile payment service. [Read more]

GRAB FORMS INDONESIAN PARTNERSHIP WITH PAYTREN

Grab, the leading on-demand transportation and mobile payments platform in Southeast Asia, today announced a strategic partnership with PayTren, one of Indonesia’s most popular mobile payments and transactions apps.

ROBINSONS RETAIL INVESTS IN PHILIPPINES E-COMMERCE STARTUP BEAUTYMNL

Philippines’s leading multi-format retailer Robinsons Retail Holdings has acquired 20 per cent stake in Taste Central Curators, which owns and operates e-commerce platform BeautyMNL.

With this, Robinsons Retail aims to further expand and strengthen its presence in the beauty format and online retain space, as per a disclosure by the company.

MAYBANK LAUNCHES CASHLESS MOBILE PAYMENT OPTION USING QR CODES

Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) launched a pilot version of cashless mobile payment option using QR codes, called 'Maybank QRPay', making it the first bank to introduce such a service in the country.

Maybank said the Maybank QRPay aims to promote greater use of cashless transactions in the country as it can be easily installed or used by any individual or business wanting to adopt cashless payment modes.

Maybank head of group community financial services Datuk Lim Hong Tat said the new service, launched today, is expected to revolutionise the way payments are conducted between customers and merchants, especially for small ticket items. [Read more]

JAPANESE E-COMMERCE FIRM TO LAUNCH PROGRAM FOR TECH STARTUPS IN SINGAPORE

Japanese internet company Rakuten said it will launch a three-month accelerator program in Singapore. The program, which begins in July, will tap in U.S.-based company Techstars, a firm with more than 1,000 firms with a combined market cap of $9.6 billion in its accelerator portfolio.

A total of 10 start-ups will be selected from around the world for Rakuten's program, which will focus on messaging technology.

The shortlisted companies will receive an initial investment of $120,000 each, coming jointly from Rakuten and Techstars. They will also receive guidance from top executives at Rakuten and access Techstars' wide network of founders, alumni and mentors. [Read more]
